PROPER CARE

Inspecting Your Catalytic Converter

*EASY*

The catalytic converter(s) should be inspected every month for exterior damage. For convenience, they should be examined together with the exhaust system. Inspect your catalytic converter(s) as follows:

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground with the engine OFF, the parking brake engaged, and the transmission in PARK (for automatic) or REVERSE (for manual). Elevate the vehicle's rear end on safety stands and block the front wheels if additional ground clearance is needed to crawl under the car.
  2. Wait for the exhaust system to cool before inspecting it in order to avoid being burned. Locate your catalytic converter in the exhaust piping between the engine and muffler.

  3. Make sure the heat shields are firmly attached to the converter. If any road debris has accumulated between the heat shield and catalytic converter, remove it. If a heat shield is loose, tighten it or repair it with high temperature exhaust tape. A loose heat shield will vibrate when the engine is on and will create a humming sound. Do not remove the heat shield to inspect the catalytic converter. Repeat this step for additional converters.
  4. If a heat shield is damaged, have it replaced by a professional automotive technician.
  5. Remove the vehicle from the safety stands if necessary. Remove the front wheel blocks if utilized.
